I’m your number #1 fan!

A Fan That Actually Delivers When the First Floor Turns Into a Furnace

Last week, our first floor decided it wanted to double as a sauna. No candles, no essential oils, just pure, unrelenting heat radiating through the living room. After a few uncomfortable nights, I finally went shopping for backup and landed on the Vornado Model 80X High Velocity Box Fan — and it turned out to be exactly what the space needed.

Box fan with an upgraded design

I’ll admit I went in with fairly low expectations. A box fan is a box fan, right? Not quite. The Vornado Model 80X showed up looking less like a bargain-bin appliance and more like something you’d actually want sitting out in your living room. The build quality is genuinely impressive — solid, well put together, no cheap rattling plastic that makes you second-guess leaving it running overnight.

Here’s what makes the Vornado Model 80X worth considering:

  • A serious amount of speed control. We’re talking 99 speed settings. Low settings give you a gentle breeze; crank it up and it becomes a real, room-clearing gust of air.
  • Kickstand for aiming airflow. You can angle it up or down depending on what you’re trying to cool, which is a nice upgrade from fans that only blow in one fixed direction.
  • Removable grille. Cleaning it takes seconds instead of turning into a project.
  • Sturdy, attractive design. It looks intentional and well-made, not like an afterthought appliance.
  • 5-year warranty. A clear sign the company is confident in how long this thing is built to last.

And it’s not just me. Other reviewers of the Vornado Model 80X High Velocity Box Fan echo a lot of the same points. Several call out how sturdy and well-constructed it feels, with more than one describing it as “not your standard cheap-y box fan.” Plenty of buyers mention it being surprisingly quiet on lower settings — quiet enough to sleep or work near — while still being powerful enough on higher settings that one office reviewer noted coworkers didn’t want to stand directly in front of it. Others highlight the sleek design and easy setup, along with how effectively it circulates air throughout an entire room rather than just blasting whoever happens to be standing closest.

Between my own experience with our overheated first floor and the consistent praise from other owners, the Vornado Model 80X clearly backs up its reputation.

Bottom line: if you have a room that heats up fast and stays that way, this is worth a look. I would recommend the Vornado Model 80X High Velocity Box Fan to anyone dealing with a stubbornly warm space looking for real relief.

Kick stand for angled flow
Easy to understand controls

As my number two fan, I have another fan as well that is as powerful but I do like the Vornado a bit more.

I also bought a while ago the Simple Deluxe 20 Inch High Velocity Floor Fan before the Vornado. And I’ll admit, the Simple Deluxe fan has a certain charm the Vornado doesn’t — that all-metal, industrial, retro-utilitarian look feels like it walked straight out of a 1950s machine shop. There’s something satisfying about a fan that looks like it means business.

It also, in fact, means business. The Simple Deluxe is loud and powerful in a way that immediately reorganizes the furniture on your coffee table if you’re not careful. On low, it’s already working harder than most fans do on high, which is either exactly what you want or a mild personal attack, depending on how badly your room needs cooling.

That said, it’s not without its quirks:

  • The open blade design is a little intimidating. There’s a wire guard, sure, but the gaps are wide enough that I develop a very specific, very irrational fear every time I walk past it that my finger is somehow going to end up somewhere it shouldn’t. LOL Rationally, I know it’s fine. Emotionally, I still give it a respectful berth. Probably shouldn’t turn this when when toddlers are around.
  • It’s genuinely loud. Great for airflow, less great if you were hoping to hold a conversation, watch TV, or hear your name being called from another room.
  • The metal build is heavy-duty but heavy, period. Moving it between rooms is more of a “commit to your choice” situation than a casual adjustment.
  • It’s built like a tank, though, and the ball-bearing motor is designed to hold up over years of use — so if raw power and durability are the priority, it delivers.

So where does that leave things? The Vornado Model 80X wins on refinement — quieter, sleeker, safer-feeling, and clearly designed for everyday living spaces without any finger-related anxiety. The Simple Deluxe fan wins on sheer force and that unmistakable retro-industrial look, if you don’t mind the noise and can make peace with an open blade design.

If you want quiet, polished, all-around comfort, go with the Vornado Model 80X High Velocity Box Fan. If you want raw power, a cool retro aesthetic, and don’t mind a little noise (and a little irrational caution around the blades), the Simple Deluxe fan will absolutely get the job done.
